ECB says planning new card payment oversight

The European Central Bank said on Thursday 3 May it is proposing a new cross-border framework to oversee all payment card systems using the euro.

The ECB said to "promote a level playing field across the euro area", it had developed an oversight framework for schemes that process euro payments.

"The proposed framework applies to all CPSs providing card payment services, including debit and/or credit cards," the ECB said in a statement.

The bank will consult on the proposal until 2 August.
