Over the last decade several leading central banks have lost influence over financial sector supervision. In the world's most important forum for banking supervisors, the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision, countries with unified supervisors are now in the majority. While the central banks guard their place at the table jealously, the independent banking supervisors, like the UK Financial Services Authority, are now in the ascendant.
