The chairman of the National Bank of Ukraine, Serhiy Tyhypko, has said he is not opposed to including members of Ukraine's uniformed ministries on the bank's board.

Tyhypko said this at a news conference Tuesday, while commenting on a statement by Ukrainian Prosecutor-General Svyatoslav Piskun.

"We will work with any member of the board," Tyhypko said. He also noted that "the National Bank has done just as good a job as prosecutors have in preventing capital flight from Ukraine". As reported earlier, in an interview with the Ukrainian weekly Zerkalo Nedeli, Piskun said that it would be appropriate, in particular, to introduce a deputy prosecutor general or a member of the Ukrainian Security Service. In Piskun's opinion, this would facilitate the fight against the use of banks to launder money.

The formation of the National Bank's board is envisioned in the law "On the National Bank of Ukraine", which was passed in 1999. The board includes the chairman of the National Bank plus 14 members (seven appointed by the president and seven by the parliament).
