Latvia calls for clarity on euro area entry date

The Latvian government wants to know for sure that the European Commission and the European Central Bank will permit the Baltic state to join the euro-area in 2008, provided that Latvia meets all Maastricht criteria, BNS reported.

The Russian-language Latvian daily Telegraf has quoted an unnamed source close to the EU Commissioner for Economic and Monetary Affairs, Joaquin Almunia, as saying that Latvia may have to put off for a couple years its accession to the euro-area.
