Polish parliament backs Balcerowicz for c.bank

Poland's Sejm public finance committee on Tuesday voted in favour of the candidacy of Leszek Balcerowicz for head of the Polish central bank.

Nineteen deputies voted for, 17 against. The candidature was backed by the former ruling coalition junior partner, the Freedom Union (UW) and ruling grouping Solidarity Electoral Action (AWS) deputies. Deputies of the opposition Polish Peasant Party (PSL) and the main opposition Democratic Left Alliance (SLD) voted against Balcerowicz.
