UK chancellor wants action on market crisis

Alistair Darling, the UK chancellor, has called on his G7 counterparts to formulate a "clear and detailed plan of action" to combat the turmoil in world markets.

In a letter to fellow finance ministers ahead of the G7 meeting next weekend, Darling said that the global financial situation had deteriorated since the last event in February and that the problems have "intensified and spread globally to create one of the strongest financial shocks for decades".
