Fraser silent on Iraqi-Australia gold deal

A magazine has suggested Australia was paid a large sum of gold in 1991 as part of an export deal.

Former Australian Reserve Bank governor Bernie Fraser has declined to comment on revelations Iraq paid Australia $150 million in gold bullion under a wheat export deal in 1991.

Magazine The Bulletin has reported the Reserve Bank approved the transaction and believed it was not in breach of trade embargoes imposed on Iraq after the Gulf War.
