Jarai could become Hungary cenbank chief in 2001

Finance minister Zsigmond Jarai has the best chances to follow GyorgySuranyi in the position of central bank governor next March, the Hungarianeconomic daily Vilaggazdasag reported. The six-year mandate of central bankgovernor Gyorgy Suranyi, who was appointed by the previous government, willexpire as of March 31, 2001 and it is widely believed that the currentgovernment does not intend to extend it.
