African regional currency may take off in 2004

NIGERIA - The proposed West African Monetary Zone that would pave room for a single currency for the sub-region may take-off in 2004, Information and National Orientation Minister, Professor Jerry Gana disclosed in Abuja Thursday.

The Monetary Zone, which was initially slated to commence next year, was later shifted in order to allow members of ECOWAS to meet the convergence criteria for the take-off of the single currency.
