Irish may reject Nice Treaty

IRELAND - Just over 30 percent of Irish voters took part in a referendum on the Nice Treaty on 7 June. RTE, the Irish state broadcaster, says early indications are that "there is a strong possibility the Nice Treaty may have been rejected by the voters."

Background:

Ireland is the only EU Member State that submitted the Nice Treaty to public scrutiny. The treaty that was agreed at the Nice summit in December 2000 formalises the institutional changes necessary to govern an enlarged EU of up to 2
