Eddie George cautious on interest rate rise

UK - Sir Edward George, governor of the Bank of England, last night played down expectations that the Bank might soon put up interest rates, saying: "I do not suggest that the timing of any such move is imminent."

The governor's remarks, made in a speech in Glasgow, came as the National Institute of Economic and Social Research, the highly respected think-tank, said the economy had stopped growing for the first time since the recession of the early 1990s.
