Central bank holdings of US debt at new high

Foreign central banks increased their holdings of U.S. debt in the last week, the Federal Reserve reported on Thursday 20 May, taking their total holdings to yet another record.

The Fed said its total holdings of Treasury and agency debt kept for overseas central banks jumped $17.710 billion to $1.209 trillion in the week ending May 19.

The breakdown of the Fed's custody holdings showed overseas central banks bought $13.588 billion of Treasuries, taking their holdings to $975.668 billion. The banks also purchased $4.122 billion in agency debt, taking those holdings to $233.717 billion.

The average of daily custody holdings rose by $7.02 billion from the average of the previous week to stand at $1.199 trillion.
