Swedish central bank governor resigns

SWEDEN - Sweden's central bank governor said Tuesday he will resign at the end of the year, two years before his term expires, as the Scandinavian country considers adopting Europe's common currency.

Urban Baeckstroem, who has held the top post since 1994, informed Riksbank officials over the weekend that he would leave early.

The Riksbank's General Council said it would start work on finding a successor who can fill the post on Jan. 1, 1993.
