Matti Vanhala to retire on disability pension
The Governor of the Bank of Finland, Matti Vanhala will take sick leave from next Monday, 15 March, and retire on disability pension from 1 April 2004. Mr Vanhala's departure from the Bank is due to his previously-diagnosed cancer. His future medical treatment prevents his continued handling of his official duties.
The duties of Governor of the Bank of Finland will be assumed by Matti Louekoski until such time that a new Governor is installed. Mr Louekoski will also hold full voting rights as member of the Governing Council of the European Central Bank. The duties of the other members of the Board will remain unchanged.
Vanhala, 58, was diagnosed with a tumor in the urinary bladder in 1999 and was on sick leave for several months last year. His mandate was to expire in June 2005.
The Parliamentary Supervisory Council will initiate the appointment process for Mr Vanhala's successor.
