Italian minister suggests return to lira

An Italian government minister has suggested the country should consider bringing back the euro.

Mr Maroni is a prominent politician in the Northern League, a junior partner in the centre-right government led by Silvio Berlusconi, prime minister.

His remarks were published in La Repubblica, an Italian daily, following decisions by France and the Netherlands who voted against the European Union's proposed constitutional treaty in separate referendums.
