BNB chief says euro breakaway idea 'absurd'

Belgian National Bank governor Guy Quaden dismissed as 'an absurd scenario' talk that some EU countries will break away from the euro zone in the wake of the French and Dutch rejections of Europe's constitution.

'This is an absurd scenario,' Quaden said as he presented the central bank's annual report.

'Some governments have received a mandate from their population to not ratify the (EU) constitution project. No government has received a mandate to leave the European Union or the eurozone,' he
