An ability to challenge convention, courage in one's convictions and a thick skin are some of the qualities essential for Monetary Policy Committee members, two external members of the Bank of England's committee have said.

David Blanchflower and Tim Besley, the two external members both of whom will soon step down, told the Treasury Select Committee, an influential group of lawmakers, on Tuesday that the committee served as an open forum in which members were free to moot vastly differing
