ECB sticks to rates decision

SWITZERLAND - European Central Bank board member Eugenio Domingo Solans stressed the ECB's independence Monday and said it will not be pressured into cutting rates by political leaders in euro zone member states.

Despite calls by some of these countries for a cut, the ECB left its benchmark interest rate unchanged at 3.25 per cent on Thursday. But it dropped strong hints a rate cut may be on the cards soon, pointing to differences of opinion on its council, Reuters reported.
