Meirelles to stay at Brazil's central bank

According to Agncia Brasil, Meirelles remarked that he met with president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who "reaffirmed the autonomy of the Central Bank and our opportunity and duty of fulfilling our mission and continuing the work we have been doing in the Central Bank."

Meirelles said that he congratulated Mantega on his appointment. "We are going to be colleagues once again," Meirelles remarked. He and Mantega worked together as members of the National Monetary Council (CMN).

In an interview after assuming his new office, Mantega reaffirmed that Meirelles would keep his job. "The differences we had at meetings of the CMN were incidental. I don't recall that we disagreed," he affirmed.
