Kenya c bank plans Moi-portrait notes phasing out
Source: Daily Nation website
The Central Bank of Kenya has designed and is planning to print new currency notes bearing the portrait of founding President Jomo Kenyatta.
The new notes, in the 50, 500 and 1,000-shilling denominations, are being seen as signalling the phasing out of currency featuring the portrait of [immediate] former President Moi.
The move could also mean that President Kibaki is keeping his campaign promise not to splash his image on the currency.
However, no mention has been made of the 200-shilling [note], which also bears Mr Moi's picture and came into circulation when he came to power in 1978.
The announcement is contained in the current issue of the Kenya Gazette of 30 May 2003, [and] signed by Finance Minister David Mwiraria.
