Brief History

Established in 1814 by sovereign decree of King William I. Nationalised on 1 August 1948 under Act of 23 April 1948 (Acquisition Act, Staatsblad N°. 165) when all shares of the bank were acquired by government. Operates under Bank Act of 1998 (Staatsblad N°. 200). It is the bank of issue, supervises the credit system and is responsible for monetary policy.
