Brief History

Founded in 1694 to raise funds for the government, thereafter the Bank of England gradually assumed the role of the nation’s central bank. It was privately owned until 1946, when it was nationalised. Parliament, through legislation, has given the bank substantial powers to pursue its mission to promote the good of the people by maintaining monetary and financial stability.
