Established by the Central Bank of Malta Act 1967 and commenced operations on 17 April 1968. The main objective of the bank is to maintain price stability and to ensure a sound financial system, thereby contributing to sustainable economic development. Since 1 January 2008, the central bank has been an integral part of the Eurosystem, with no independent power to determine monetary policy.
