Brief History

The Central Bank of Belize was established on January 1, 1982, shortly after Belize gained independence from the United Kingdom in September 1981. The central bank is successor to the Monetary Authority of Belize (1976–1981) and the Board of Commissioners of Currency (1894–1976). The Central Bank of Belize Act of 1982 defines the central bank’s objectives as fostering monetary stability, especially stability of the exchange rate, and promoting credit and exchange conditions
