One in five central banks to issue new banknotes next year

Third of respondents have seven denominations of banknotes in circulation

One-fifth of central banks plan to issue new banknotes over the next year, data from the Currency Benchmarks 2026 shows.

The benchmark received responses from 37 currency departments. Of these, seven indicated that they plan to issue new banknotes in 0–1 years. Over the next 2–5 years, 27% of the respondents aim to conduct a similar exercise, while one-tenth (10.8%) expect to issue a new series in more than five years’ time. Two-fifths of central banks say they have “no plans currently” (43.2%)
