Staff strength and salary associated with size of reserves

Managers report greater satisfaction with non-staff resources than staffing levels

Central banks with above average reserve holdings have a higher number of full time-equivalent (FTE) staff devoted to reserves management than those with lower levels of reserves, data from the Reserve Benchmarks 2026 shows.

Reserves holdings, including foreign exchange and gold, average $79.5 billion across the 81 benchmark respondents. The sizes range from $150 million to over $1 trillion with a median of $11.2 billion.

The benchmark also received data on reserve management departments’ FTE
