The number of counterfeit banknotes increased year on year in 2023 in the Czech Republic, Germany, Slovakia and Slovenia, while Denmark announced security upgrades to its banknotes.

In Germany, the use of counterfeits was up by 28.2% compared with 2022. “The increase in counterfeit figures was driven by a handful of major cases of fraud, predominantly involving counterfeit €200 [$219] and €500 banknotes,” said Burkhard Balz, the Deutsche Bundesbank official responsible for cash.
