IMF: Argentina needs ‘a strong and credible central bank’

Central bank caps banks’ FX holdings ahead of Milei inauguration on December 10

International Monetary Fund communications director Julie Kozack stressed in a press conference on December 7 that Argentina needs “a strong and credible central bank”. Her statement came three days before Javier Milei takes office as Argentina’s president, having promised to abolish the central bank.

Kozack was asked whether the fund had concerns about the central bank’s independence, given that Milei’s governor-designate is close to incoming economy minister Luis Caputo.
