Suriname president signs central bank independence law

IMF currently withholding loan payments to corruption-plagued country

Suriname’s president Chan Santokhi ratified a law meant to improve the central bank’s independence and governance on April 17.

The national assembly passed the law in June 2022, after Suriname committed to the reform as part of a December 2021 International Monetary Fund package. The IMF granted Suriname a three-year loan, worth about $688 million at the time of approval.
