Canadian governor shrugs off attacks by opposition politicians

Official opposition leader has pledged to fire Macklem as trade union boss also criticises central bank

Bank of Canada governor Tiff Macklem said on October 26 he is not worried about the independence of the central bank, following attacks on its policies by opposition parties.

“I do not have any concerns about the bank’s independence being under threat,” he said. Macklem acknowledged the central bank is “getting lots of tough questions”, adding “lots of people are giving us advice on what we should do”.
