Myanmar orders FX restrictions as reports say deputy governor was shot

Expert says currency move is "pretty desperate" as military junta tries to deal with turmoil

Myanmar’s central bank has imposed tough foreign exchange controls amid continuing post-coup turmoil, while several media sources reported that a deputy governor has been shot.

The Central Bank of Myanmar directed all citizens, including those outside the country, to deposit foreign currency and convert it to local money. The kyat has depreciated significantly since the February 2021 coup by the country’s military.
