The US Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that year-on-year consumer-price index (CPI) inflation came to 6.8% in November.

The BLS notice, published on December 10, said this amounted to “the largest 12-month increase since the period ending June 1982”.

Prices rose 0.8% over the month of November itself, after a 0.9% increase in October.

Within the CPI, soaring energy prices stand out, increasing by several times the index average. Energy prices overall rose by 33.3% in the year to November
