Uruguay’s digital currency pilot ‘close to launch’, says governor

Central bank initiative will allow public to access digital currency via mobile wallets

The Central Bank of Uruguay is on the cusp of launching its own digital currency pilot, which will be accessible through mobile wallets.

Speaking at an event earlier this month, the governor of the central bank announced it was “fairly close” to launching the digital asset, which will behave exactly as cash does but in a digital format.

“It will be a process of trial and error, success and failures,” he said.
