Supreme Court appears sympathetic to Cook

Conservative judges lament the way governor’s removal was handled and risks to Fed independence

Conservative justices on the US Supreme Court appeared sympathetic to Lisa Cook on January 21, when they heard oral arguments in the case over the attempt to dismiss her as a Federal Reserve governor.

US president Donald Trump attempted to fire Cook in August over alleged mortgage fraud. The court in October allowed her to stay on as governor while the litigation proceeded.

During oral arguments, chief justice John Roberts lamented that the administration’s allegations of fraud were contradicted
