Libya’s rival factions nominate new central bank governor

Appointment under compromise agreement still has to be approved by parliament aligned with eastern forces

Libya’s rival factions have agreed to nominate Naji Mohamed Issa Balgasim as the new governor of its central bank, according to a compromise agreement signed by the two sides.

Representatives of the authorities in eastern Libya and their rivals in the west of the country signed the agreement in a ceremony in the United Nations Support Mission in Libya’s (UNSMIL) headquarters in Tripoli on September 26. Marei Muftah Rhayyel al-Barassi has been nominated as deputy governor.
