Rahman says GDP ignores country’s vulnerability to environmental degradation

A former governor of Bangladesh Bank has said the banking sector needs to take account of his country’s vulnerability to climate change when making loans and assessing the state of the wider economy.

Atiur Rahman said on September 6 that the current way of calculating GDP did not reflect the increasing ecological damage to which Bangladesh is exposed.

“Unless we put nature into our thought process, we will always underestimate GDP,” he said.
