Lebanese authorities arrest former central bank governor

Riad Salameh detained in Beirut over allegations of embezzlement

Riad Salameh, a former governor of the Central Bank of Lebanon, was arrested on September 3 in the capital Beirut for alleged embezzlement of public funds, forgery, abuse of influence and money laundering.

The National News Agency (NNA), which operates under the aegis of the Ministry of Information, said public prosecutor Jamal Hajjar had ordered Salameh’s arrest. This followed a court hearing on Salameh’s alleged involvement in embezzling funds in collusion with Lebanese broker Optimum Invest.
