The Bank for International Settlements (BIS) published a data series today (August 20) on central bank balance sheets, with some historical data extending back to 1668.

The data is currently available for more than 50 advanced and emerging economies. Although the “median start year” is 1942, many of the datasets go back to the years when individual central banks was established. In the case of Sveriges Riksbank, widely recognised as the world’s oldest central bank, that is 1668.
