US official outlines expanded role for poorer nations at IMF

Shambaugh discusses quota reform and new officials for developing countries

A US Treasury official has suggested reforms to the distribution of shares and senior positions within the International Monetary Fund.

If adopted, these would expand – at least modestly – the role of emerging and developing countries within the fund. The US is a key player in negotiations over a new round of IMF quota reforms, as it is the only country with the power to block reform unilaterally.
