São Tomé president rejects firing of governor

Prime minister moved to replace Américo Barros after governor contested party leadership

The president of São Tomé and Principe announced on April 22 that he had vetoed the removal of central bank governor Américo Barros. Carlos Vila Nova said that the cabinet had not satisfied the legal prerequisites for removing a governor.

Vila Nova, speaking upon his return from a visit to Equatorial Guinea, said that Barros remains governor. Prime minister Jorge Bom Jesus said he would accept the president’s decision, adding that he would not discuss decisions made by other institutions and
