Colombian president sparks controversy with central bank appointments

Opposition senator claims choice of board members shows nepotism and state capture

Central Bank of Colombia, Bogota

Colombia’s president, Iván Duque, has announced the appointment of Bibiana Taboada and Mauricio Villamizar to the board of the Central Bank of Colombia.

The appointments have sparked criticism from opposition politicians and some independent observers, who warn the president’s choices may be driven by nepotism.

The appointees will replace Gerardo Hernández and Ana Fernanda Maiguashca on the board. Maiguashca has served since 2013, and Hernández since 2017. Both were appointed by Juan Manuel
