Suriname’s president withdrew his nomination of a convicted criminal to be governor of the country’s scandal-hit central bank, following strong public criticism.

Some of the central bank’s own officials denounced president Dési Bouterse’s nomination of Sigmund Proeve to take over the Central Bank of Suriname amid accusations that reserves had been stolen or misused.
