Central banks cannot fight a populist Tweet storm – panel

Populist leaders such as Donald Trump comfortably outgun central banks on social media

Central banks have no capability to respond – in kind – to a social media attack by a populist leader, according to a panel of central banking experts attending the National Bank of Ukraine and Bank of Poland’s Annual Research Conference in Kiev last month.

Populist leaders have emerged in a number of countries in recent years, including in the world’s two largest democracies, India and the US, as well as in larger central and east European economies such as Hungary, Poland, the Czech Republic
