The emergence of digital tokens, such as bitcoin, issued to the general public has caught a lot of attention globally in recent years. It prompted intensive debates among the central bank circle and academia over whether such things could become money in the future. Another related debate has emerged as to whether central banks should issue their own digital tokens or new types of digital currency (so-called central bank digital currency, or CBDC). CBDC could be a new interest-bearing liability
