Argentine central bank can progress without independence law – chief economist

The Central Bank of Argentina can contribute to improving the country’s economy without a new law reinforcing its independence, chief economist Pablo Neumeyer tells Central Banking.

The business-friendly president Mauricio Macri appointed Federico Sturzenegger as governor in December 2015 with the aim of reducing inflation and restoring credibility and independence to the central bank.

Under his watch, the bank has introduced a free-floating exchange rate, which initially caused a depreciation
