Public protector backs down over Sarb mandate challenge

Mkhwebane admits she lacks power to suggest parliament make changes to the constitution

South Africa’s public protector will not challenge the country’s central bank in court after she formally retracted her recent claims about the institution’s mandate.

In a response to the South African Reserve Bank’s (Sarb) application to the high court, published on July 10, Busisiwe Mkhwebane announced she would not be opposing the central bank’s challenge, having sought legal advice.

“In the circumstances… I no longer oppose the relief sought and consent to an order in the following terms
