Waller: my next FOMC vote is ‘close to a coin flip’

Governor says January’s positive jobs figures may be ‘noise’ rather than ‘signal’

Christopher Waller has said that whether the US Federal Reserve should cut or hold interest rates is an issue that is currently “close to a coin flip”.

In a speech on February 23, the Fed board member said that “close to zero net job creation over 2025” pointed to a “weak and fragile job market”. 

Waller said that during the Federal Open Market Committee’s (FOMC) previous meeting on January 28, the balance of risks for him had been weighted towards further easing, even in the absence of data
