Fed risks president’s ire by holding rates

Experts say decision was obvious way to go, given US labour market and inflation figures

The US Federal Reserve’s rate-setting committee has voted to hold rates, despite president Donald Trump’s repeated calls for swingeing cuts.

The Federal Open Market Committee’s decision to keep the federal funds rate at a range of 3.5-3.75% follows decisions to cut by 0.25 basis points at each of its three previous meetings.

There were two dissenters on the FOMC, both of whom voted for a further quarter point cut: Christopher Waller, one of the four remaining contenders to take over as Fed chair
