Digital euro ‘may require’ battery-powered cards for offline use

Eurosystem could develop its own app to manage digital euro accounts

The European Central Bank (ECB) is considering using battery-powered smart cards for a digital euro to enable offline payments, it said on June 24.

Any central bank digital currency for the eurozone would have to be analogous to cash, meaning it must be capable of offline payments. Locations with limited network coverage and power cuts are situations when this could be useful, the ECB said in its progress report on the digital euro.

To pay offline, users would have to pre-fund their digital euro
