Hungary’s gamified CBDC pilot designed for children

Student Safe project is the first live retail CBDC pilot in Europe

The Central Bank of Hungary (MNB) launched the second version of its central bank digital currency (CBDC) app in May. But in contrast to most such pilots, the gamified interface is aimed at children.

“This is a live pilot, which actually targets the future users of CBDC,” MNB chief digital officer Anikó Szombati tells Central Banking. “These are the 8–14 year-old children and their parents who are already tech savvy and who are open to giving us honest feedback.”
